July 14

Center fielder Chris Duffy hasn't played since Tuesday because of an inner ear infection. He likely will sit again today as the Curve wrap up the first half of the Eastern League schedule before entering the All-Star break.

July 7

Senators starter Justin Jones wasn't as fortunate as he was lifted in the first inning. Chris Duffy led off with a ground-rule double, but Jones struck out the next two batters only to walk the next two. He was replaced by Mike Hinckley.

The Curve had a great opportunity to get all three runs back against Hinckley as he walked the first batter he faced to score Duffy from third. Luis Cruz swung on the first pitch of his at-bat, popping out to short center field to end the threat.

Making his first appearance for the Curve in five days, Duffy had his best game since returning from shoulder surgery on June 15. Duffy went 3-for-4 in the game with a double and a triple along with making a diving catch in center in the third inning.

Evidently, not being a part of the Pirates' future doesn't seem to be bothering Duffy on the field but said he thinks he knows part of the reason for the Curve's recent struggles.

"I haven't been here long enough to really pinpoint any one thing, but it seems like everyone is playing a little tight right now,'' Duffy said.

"Especially at this level and at Triple-A, you have to try and have some fun while you are out there. A lot of the older guys at those levels are trying to do that, and it helps loosen you up when the pressure is on.''

Duffy also said that regardless of where he ends up, his main focus right now is to get back to playing baseball every day.

"I can't worry about what decisions are being made about me because that will just throw me off,'' Duffy said. "The mental aspect of the game is always the hardest, but my situation is a lot different from most of the guys in here. I'm just going to work on what I can and go out and perform to the best of my ability.''

Game recap

Key player: Chris Duffy went 3-for-4 with a double and triple for Altoona.

"A Matter of Time"

Chris Duffy knows his days in the Pirate organization are numbered.

''I can read between the lines,'' Duffy said Sunday in his return to the Curve after a five-day absence. ''I'm going to try to work on a trade ... show other teams that I'm healthy, and that will be it.''

"Duffy to be honored as '04 MVP"

Chris Duffy never could have imagined when he left Altoona in 2004 that he'd be back playing for the Curve four years later on the night he's honored as one of the best players in franchise history.

Duffy once again is just a regular member of the Curve - not a player on a major league rehab assignment - as he was optioned to Double-A by the Pirates on Thursday. The center fielder's tenure with the Curve could last a while, possibly even the rest of the season.

"Duffy may be staying"

Chris Duffy could remain with the Curve for a good bit longer as the Pirates appear to be set to option the center fielder to Double-A.

Duffy has been on a major league rehab assignment with Altoona since June 15, and such an assignment can last only 20 days. The Pirates must activate him from the disabled list by Friday, then they can option him to either Triple-A Indianapolis or the Curve.

"Duffy's MLB future depends on his health"

There has to be a spot on a major league roster somewhere for Chris Duffy.

If he’s healthy.

Duffy is one of the five-best defensive center fielders in the game. He is absolutely fantastic with the glove, which he proved for the Pirates the past two years and with the Curve in 2003 and ’04.

"Duffy Returning to Altoona"

One of the best players in Curve history is returning to the team today, though in a much different scenario than when he left four years ago.

Center fielder Chris Duffy is expected to begin a rehab assignment today in Connecticut. Duffy will return to Altoona for this week’s homestand and could be with the club for an extended period.

Excerpts from the Altoona Mirror's "Covering the Bases" segment:

August 8

HEADING HOME: Former Curve OF Chris Duffy will continue his career in the Pirates organization after clearing waivers and being assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Duffy was designated for assignment Aug. 1 after a series of health issues forced him to the DL on July 25.

August 2

SAFE AT FIRST: The sad saga of CF Chris Duffy appears to be over for both the Curve and Pirates. Duffy was designated for assignment by the Bucs on Thursday and returned home to Arizona. There's a good chance some team will claim Duffy on waivers since he is still considered a great defensive player.

July 28

STEALING SECOND: CF Chris Duffy could return to the Curve during the team's next homestand that begins Friday, manager Tim Leper said on his weekly radio show. Duffy is rehabbing in Bradenton, Fla., from an inner-ear infection and dehydration.

July 26

SAFE AT FIRST: CF Chris Duffy was placed on the disabled list Friday with his inner ear infection. He hasn't played since getting dehydrated and leaving the game July 17.

July 10

HEADING HOME: The Curve starting lineup looked very different Thursday than it has the past few weeks without 2B Shelby Ford or CF Chris Duffy. Ford left Wednesday night's game with an ankle injury, and Duffy was kept out with flu-like symptoms.

July 7

LEADING OFF: Chris Duffy exhausted his 20-day major league rehab assignment and was officially optioned to the Curve on Sunday. OF Pedro Powell was placed on the disabled list in order to make room for Duffy, as he now counts against Altoona's 24-man roster.

June 25

ROUNDING THIRD: Chris Duffy continues to add to one of the records he set in a Curve uniform from 2003-04. The all-time franchise leader in stolen bases, Duffy stole his 67th base Monday night. He swiped 34 in 2003 and 32 in '04.

June 23

SAFE AT FIRST: The Pirates transferred CF Chris Duffy, who's rehabbing with the Curve, from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list Sunday. The move was made to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever T.J. Beam, who was promoted to Pittsburgh from Triple-A. Duffy played nine innings Sunday, the first time he's done so since joining the Curve a week ago.

From the Pirates Official site:

Duffy navigates long road to recovery
By Jennifer Langosch

BRADENTON, Fla. -- As Chris Duffy stood in the small clubhouse at Pirate City earlier this week, he finally smiled again. That smile carried on as he went onto the field for conditioning drills -- he ran with a grin, laughed with his teammates.

For Duffy, that smile has been a long time coming.

Why the smile now? Why the smile when his rehabilitation process still isn't over? Why the smile when his chances at making the Opening Day roster seem slim? Where did this new relaxation come from?

Duffy's answer was simple: "Now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel."
