On Deck for Chris Duffy:

July 23, 2010

The week after the All-Star break had the Iron Pigs of Lehigh Valley on the road to Louisville, KY and Indianapolis for eight games.  Duffy started 6 of the 8, pinch hit in a 7th and got a day off on July 21st.  He hit .250 over those seven games, including two doubles, a triple and a homer-run, with seven runs scored and four driven in.

Indianapolis found Duffy returning to Victory Field as a visitor against an Indian's team he played for two years ago as part of the Pirates organization.  Most of the  players on that team are gone, but it had to have been an odd feeling, though I imagine last year's visit into PNC Park as a member of the Brewers...against the team he made his major league debut with...was as strange.

The Iron Pigs swept the Indians, and Duffy's 5th homerun on July 20th, was a 2-run shot that gave the Pigs the early 2-run lead.  Ozzie Chavez followed Duffy with a solo shot in the 3rd inning making it a 3-0 Iron Pigs lead.  They would add an insurance run in the 7th, and win 4-2.

Duffy and the rest of the Iron Pigs return home tonight to play the Norfolk Tides.  On a rain-lengthened night, Norfolk's offense was too much for the Pigs' pitching, and the final score was 8-3.  Duffy  lead-off the 9th with a double and eventually scored as the Pigs attempted to rally, but in the end came up short.

Duffy's current stats:

For the month of July:  .296 avg  including 1 HR and 7 RBI's, with a .787 OPS

For the season:  .256 avg, including 5 HR's, 34 RBI's and  a .704 OPS.

July 13, 2010

Here we sit at the traditional mid-point for the season, and I have fallen woefully behind on updates here.  I apologize...Life sort of side-tracked me a little.

I thought this would be a good time to get caught up with Duffy and his season to date.  And I have to admit, I thought with the way he started the season, we would be seeing him play as an All-Star representative for Lehigh Valley, but after a small ankle injury, he seemed to struggle to get back on that pace.  He has leveled of a little and will hopefully come back strong in the second half of the season.

One thing, before I put up the numbers for the season to date, the Phillies have since promoted Domonic Brown from AA-Reading to AAA Lehigh Valley, released Willie Tavares, who was taking at-bats from Duffy, and acquired Chris Aguila.

According to the Hog Blog, "Domonic Brown and John Mayberry Jr. will be in the lineup every night, and the Phillies want Chris Duffy and Chris Aguila to get more at-bats."

Okay, so the numbers up to the last out on July 11, 2010:

.250 avg.  in 75 games and 288 At-Bats
72 hits, including 15 doubles, 3 triples and 4 home-runs.
37 runs-scored and 30 RBI's
11 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
105 Total bases
33 walks and 75 strike-outs

Catch you back here after the break.

June 8, 2010

A day  after going 2 for 5, with a home run that sparked the Iron Pigs' 11-5 wn over the Charlotte Knoghts, Chris went 2 for 3 and manufactured the only run of the game last night against Charlotte.  Awesome!

From the Allentown Morning Call:

Matt Zaleski...retired the first nine IronPigs, used a double play to get out of a jam in the fourth after walking the first two hitters, and didn't give up a hit until Duffy's one-out single the opposite way to left.
After Duffy got to third with two outs by stealing second and moving up when Flower's throw skipped into center field, Paul Hoover -- who was 1-for-19 since his return as Brian Schneider's fill-in for the Phillies -- worked the count full before chasing in Duffy with a single dumped into shallow right field.
Charlotte (26-34) got out of a jam in the sixth after Taveras lined a leadoff doubel and advanced to third on a sacrifice when Neil Sellers hit the ball hard but right at shortstop Rob Hudson, playing in, and Tracy skied out to center. The IronPigs also put their first two runners on board in the seventh on singles by Duffy and Melvin Dorta but after Hoover struck out, Duffy was thrown out trying to steal third, and Luis Maza looked at a third strike to end the inning.

Iron Pigs' starter Nelson Figueroa pitched a good game, but gave credit where it was due also:

First baseman Andy Tracy ended the third with a diving stop of Luis Rodriquez's one-hopper up the line, recovering to sprint to the bag for the final out. Then, in the sixth, center fielder Willy Taveras took extra bases away from leadoff Jordan Danks with a full-extension back-hand diving catch in the left-center field gap, and right fielder Chris Duffy ended the inning with a running grab of Josh Kroeger's slicing liner down the right field line.

"The team played great defense behind me," said Figueroa, who was originally obtained by the Phillies in July, 2000, from Arizona as part of the
Curt Schilling trade. "I was able to throw strikes and they were aggressive at the plate; to be able to go six innings and to throw close to 100 pitches is a bonus on a night like this."

Also yesterday, from the Hog Blog:

Monday was the annual pre-game Miracle League exhibition, one of the promotional highlights for the players during the season.

"This is really pretty special," said outfielder Chris Duffy. "It puts things in perspective."

Charlotte's Buck Coats and Rob Hudson wee among the Knights who joined the IronPigs players and staff on field during the game helping assist the kids during the 45-minute game.

The IronPigs are wearing one-of-a-kind uniforms to mark the occassion which will be available to fans in an on-line auction that begins June 8. All proceeds will go to the Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley. For more details go

June 7, 2010

After sitting out a couple of games Chris Duffy returned to the Iron Pigs' starting lineup yesterday, patroling right field.  In a game that included a 69-minute rain delay, Duffy put Lehigh Valley on the board with a solo home run in the fourth inning.  He would end the day going 2 for 5, and scored 2 runs...the second on a bunt single.

Yesterday's game brings his average up to .241, with 4 HR's and 24 RBI's.

From the Allentow Morning Call:

Duffy gave the IronPigs their first run with a fourth-inning solo homer off Jeff Marquez, who had scattered four hits over seven shutout innings in a win over Lehigh Valley on May 11 in Charlotte. But his day ended, as did IronPigs starter Drew Carpenter's, when the tarp came on the field after that fourth inning.

While the Knights managed just one run on two hits over the last four innigns against Alex Concepcion (2-1), Mike Zagurski and Brian Gordon, Lehigh Valley ripped into Kyle McCulloch in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with singles by Sardinha and Luis Maza. Rich Thompson followed a groundout with a two-run single that cut the deficit to 5-3, and after a Neil Sellers single Tracy lined a ball past Viciedo into the right field corner, scoring both runners and giving him 1,001 RBIs (including 43 in the majors) for his 15-year pro career.

"It just means I'm old," Tracy quipped afterward. "But it was a good time for me to get them."

After Cody Ransom grounded out to a drawn-in infield for the second out, Duffy laid down a first-pitch bunt, and Tracy trotted home after the ball squirted away.

Yes, hideously late in updating the site, but there hasn't been much to update.  Since returning back to the field after that little run in with the wall, Duffy's bat has cooled off a lot...something like 4 for 27 since my last post.  Ouch!  And I don't get much information in the way of his defense...though I do know he hasn't committed an error since the first week of the season.  I expect nothing less with his glove though.

On a non-baseball related note, I'd like to wish Baby Duffy a Happy 1st Birthday.  I don't know the exact date, but I do know it was this time last year when Chris went home to welcome his baby girl into the world.  So, Happy Birthday!  I hope she is happy and healthy.

May 25, 2010

Okay, I WAS ahead of the curve, and then fell way behind...sorry about that.

There hasn't been much in the way of news for Chris...he's in a little bit of a lull offensively, and I guess he tried to get something started with a bunt on Sunday, and struck out, which drew a bit of criticism to him:

Chris Duffy drew some criticism by striking out on a bunt attempt Sunday with the go-ahead run on first with nobody out in the ninth inning. Duffy swung through the first pitch, tried unsuccessfully to bunt on the second, then fouled off another bunt attempt to cap an 0-for-4 night.

Some, looking at Duffy's reaction afterward, thought that the outfielder wasn't aware he had two strikes on him, but Duffy said Monday he knew what the count was.

He also said the bunt was on for only the second pitch.

After Sunday's game Huppert, asked whether Duffy was bunting on his own, answered "He said he hasn't been swinging the bat real well and he felt that was the best option for him to help the team.":

Duffy confirmed that explanation before Monday's game.

"I thought it was the best way for me to get the runner over, considering how I've been hitting lately," said Duffy, who was hitting only .213 (10-for-47) over his last 11 games before Monday's game despite hitting safely in nine of those 11 games.

May 20, 2010

I'm ahead of the game today -- Woohoo!  The Iron Pigs had a 1030am start today, so they're done for the day, and beat the Louisville Bats 8-4.  And Chris Duffy had a major hand in that win!  He went 1 for 4 today, but that "1" was a 2-run, 2-RBI, tie-breaking double...Sweet!

Recap from the Allentown Morning Call on today's game:

Duffy lined a tie-breaking two-run double after Dorta kept the inning alive with a pinch-hit single to give the IronPigs an 8-4 win over Louisville before an Education Day crowd of 10,000, the season's fifth capacity turnout at Coca-Cola Park.
*

Dorta and Duffy produced after Sellers, who had walked and moved up on a sacrifice, ran into the inning's second out at third base on Brian Bocock's routine grounder to short. But Dorta followed with a base hit through the right side, sending Bocock to second, and Duffy chased them both home with his ninth double to the wall in right center.

Suomi followed a two-out error that enabled Cody Ransom to reach base -- and a single by Sellers -- with a first-pitch missile over the Bud Light Trough in right for his first homer since joining the team a week ago.

Duffy's hit enabled Drew Carpenter to even his record at 4-4. Carpenter allowed eight hits and three runs while throwing 95 pitches
.

And this from the Morning Call, Hog Blog (I do not make things up, seriously) I found these quotes from Duffy about marathon games from the previous two nights:

Chris Duffy said the ninth-inning rally, which ended when Thompson flied to center with the tying runs at first and second, was another indication of the IronPigs' never-quit attitude.

"I can speak for every guy in here -- we're playing to the final out," the veteran outfielder said. "Every guy in this room, we want to win. Guys are really pulling for each other. When you look at something like tonight, after what we've been through, we could have given up. But we didn't. And I think that says a lot about the character we have on this team.

"This is a good group of guys, and to be honest I can't remember being on a team where I wanted to win so bad for these guys. I see it from every guy. I don't see anybody playing for themselves, and that makes you want to play that much harder."

---

Asked whether he had ever been through a stretch like the last four days, Duffy pondered for a few seconds, then remembered a stretch in 2003 when he was with Altoona.

"I think I remember in Double-A in ''03, we had an extra-inning getaway day, then went to play a team we had been rained out of almost the whole series earlier in the season. We went up to their place and we had a double header the first night, a double header the second night and then a 10:30 morning game. And I played every inning of those games. Of course I was only 22 years old. But I was dead then. Now ... I'm going to sleep pretty good after tomorrow. It's going to be nap time."

May 17, 2010

It took me a little longer than I anticipated to get caught up from my trip, so I have to apologize for the lack of updates this past week.

Since my last entry, Duffy has gone 9 for 33, with 3 RBI's giving him a .262 average for the week.  He's at .269, with 20 RBI's for the season overall, so while there's been a little bit of a drop-off, I'm confident he can get into another groove like he was in to start the season.

Below is an article/interview I found from the Allentown Morning Call this morning.  Thanks to Chris for being so honest and I wish that the circumstances had been different for him in Pittsburgh...they could use him in left field this season.  Anyway, here's the piece...

Believe it or not, Chris Duffy didn't go to spring training with the intention of winning a major league job.

Instead, the 29-year-old, who has just over three years of major league service time, was simply looking for a place to play a full season -- and have some fun playing the game.

''My last full season where I haven't missed at least a month is 2003.'' the IronPigs outfielder said. ''It really is frustrating, to be honest with you, and I would just love to play a full season.''

In 2004, in his fourth pro season and second at Double-A Altoona, he missed the season's final 31 games with a sore right wrist.

In 2005, the year he made his mid-season major league debut with Pittsburgh, Duffy missed the last two weeks with a hamstring pull.

He was Pittsburgh's Opening Day centerfielder in 2006 but after a slow start went home for a month instead of accepting a demotion, reportedly to ponder his desire to continue his career. Later reinstated, he hit .349 at Triple-A and returned to the Pirates in August.

A year later Duffy was again Pittsburgh's Opening Day centerfielder but a troublesome left ankle and later shoulder surgery limited him to 70 games. Recovering from the surgery cost him all but 30 minor league games the following season.

Last year, after making Milwaukee's Opening Day roster as a non-roster invitee, Duffy played just 19 games before being sent to the minors, then played just three games at Triple-A Nashville before leaving for the rest of the season in late May.

''My wife [Kaitlin] was having some complications with the birth of our first child so I went to be with her for a while, and then something told me I just had to stay with her,'' Duffy said, explaining his absence. ''I just thought it was the right thing to do.''

That situation behind him -- Kaylin Duffy will celebrate her first birthday June 1 -- Duffy resumed his career this spring, signing a minor league contract with the
Phillies.

''I understood making the big league team wasn't going to happen, and that wasn't my intention. If it was, I wouldn't have signed here,'' Duffy said ''My agents have had players here [Scott Mathieson, Jason Anderson, Drew Naylor], so we were able to get some positive feedback on the organization, and they've known [assistant general manager] Chuck Lamar for a long time.''

A sore quad muscle limited Duffy's playing time in the spring but so far has managed to stay on the field for the IronPigs. As of now he's missed just four games due to injury, the recent Indianapolis series with concussion-like symptoms suffered in a collision with the wall in Rochester while making a catch.

''The way I play the game, I would have run through the wall to catch that ball,'' said Duffy, calling that injury a ''little setback.''

After keeping his average above .300 for most of the first two weeks, Duffy takes a .272 average with three homers and 19 RBIs into today's game at Gwinnett.

''I think any player when they miss so much time will doubt their abilities, wonder whether they can still play,'' Duffy said, referring to his 2009 season. ''Then I didn't play a lot all spring. so I came here wondering if i could still do it.

''But I just went out and played hard, and realized, 'Yeah, I still got it.' That builds the confidence, and if I put up a full year with numbers, then I figure I could be a little more picky next year and market myself better.''

The stability of the Phillies organization is a stark contrast to what he experienced with the Pirates, who selected Duffy on the eighth round of the 2001 draft out of Arizona State.

''We played for three different [general managers] when we were there. three different big league managers,'' Duffy said, referring to his minor league teammates. ''It felt almost as if you were being traded every year, like you had to prove yourself every year. We were young at the time and all that change made it difficult for us. We were trying to establish ourselves, and that's hard enough in itself, but to establish it for a new coaching staff every year made it rough at times.''

After hitting .341 in 39 games under Lloyd McClendon and interim manager Pete Mackanin in 2005, Duffy clashed the following year with new manager Jim Tracy over Tracy's attempts to change Duffy's swing and approach at the plate. The two later ironed out their differences -- Duffy reverted to his own stance upon joining Indianapolis, then hit .282 with 23 steals in 53 games with the Pirates -- and Duffy said the incident isn't an indication of his personality.

''Every manager I've had in the minors, all the players I've played with, I've gotten along with everybody,'' he said. ''I feel like I'm a really good guy, a real easy guy to get along with. It was just that one time. Not many things stay secret in baseball, but if organizations do their homework they'll see that.''

After coming off the bench for the first time in his career last season with the
Brewers -- he had just 32 at-bats before being designated for assignment on May 22 -- Duffy said he has a new outlook this year.

''I was really fortunate, to be honest, to get another shot to play the game,'' he said. ''I have different outlook on the game now; I don't know if has anything to do with being a new father or what.

''If I had a bad game and we win, I'm happy. A lot of younger guys don't think that way, but then you see the older guys, the way they go about their business, especially the ones who have been successful and have stuck around for a long time Â… they'll go hitless and you couldn't tell what they did. I always thought, 'How do they do that?' It didn't affect them, at least it didn't seem that way. Maybe it just takes time, and then you realize it's what you have to do to stay focused.''

Note from the site administrator: Not that it matters in the context of the article, but I believe Mrs. Duffy's name is Kristin.  I can be such a detail freak sometimes.

The Iron Pigs finish their series against the Gwinnett Braves this evening, with the first pitch set for 7:05pm, Eastern Time.  After that, they return to Lehigh Valley for an 8-game homestand.

May 7, 2010

Welcome back to the lineup, Chris Duffy!  Making his first start since he crashed into the all in Rochester, Chris went 2 for 5, but those 2?  Both solo home runs!  Sweet!   His average now sits at .280, with  17 RBI's for the season.

A bit of the game recap from the Iron Pigs' Website:

Chris Duffy, playing in his first game since April 30 due to concussion-like symptoms, followed with solo home runs in the third and fifth innings to keep the IronPigs close after Columbus plated two runs apiece in the third and fourth.

Duffy had just three multi home run games in his entire nine-year career coming into play Thursday. His last two-homer game came on September 9th of 2006 while playing with the Pirates.
And from the Allentown Morning Call:

The numbers haven't added up very well for the IronPigs so far this season.

Why should Thursday night be any different?

On a night when Lehigh Valley matched a franchise record with four home runs, the IronPigs watched Columbus double them up on the scoreboard in a 10-5 loss before 7,995 at
Coca-Cola Park.

In their first 25 games the IronPigs had outscored their opponents by 18 runs, hit .291 with runners in scoring position, were fifth in hitting (.270), third in runs (125) and third in ERA (3.93). Yet they won only 11 of those games.

''You would think doing the little things like we are would have paid off,'' said outfielder Chris Duffy, who celebrated his return from missing 41/2 games with concussion-like symptoms with two solo homers, including a majestic shot off the upper billboards in right.

* * *

Duffy's first homer, high off the billboards just inside the right field line, tied the game at 2-2. His second, a shot to right center, came after the Clippers scored two in the third to reclaim the lead. Columbus answered that second homer by chasing Brian Mazone during a five-run sixth that put the game away.

''Every time we answered they came right back,'' Duffy said. ''And it wasn't with just one, it was with a couple or more.''

Before the game Duffy took batting practice for the first time since leaving the game in Rochester last Friday after colliding with the outfield wall while making a catch.

''I don't find it too hard to get back in the swing of things,'' Duffy said. ''Maybe if I had missed more time, but I felt pretty comfortable and just tried to relax and see the ball.''

* * *

Columbus won for the seventh time in nine games despite a combined 0-for-9 night by the top two hitters in its lineup, Trevor Crowe and former Phillies prospect Jason Donald. Donald, who came into the game hitting .323, struck out three times.

However, the bottom three hitters in the Clipper lineup, Chris Gimenez, Brian Buscher and Anderson Hernandez, combined to reach base eight times on four hits and four walks, score four times and knock in four runs.

''Obviously those guys could hit. there's really no place to take a break in their lineup,' Duffy said. ''It's tough knowing you have to score runs and take advantage of your opportunities.

''We just have to forget about tonight and come back tomorrow,'' he continued. ''I know Vogie [
Ryan Vogelsong, tonight's starter] was in here doing his homework during the game. It's tough when you're the first guy and you don't have the scouting reports or any video to work with.''

And....I just checked the Iron Pigs website...No 4, is slotted in at LF tonight! Sweet!

May 5, 2010

The Iron Pigs are enjoying a rare off day today, and hopefully when they take the field tomorrow night against Columbus at Coca-Cola Park, Chris will be good to go.

According to a couple of things I found, he was medically cleared during the game on Friday, but was still feeing the after effects of his crash into the wall in Rochester that night.

May 3, 2010

Gentle reminder to Chris...he's Spiderman not Superman -- He climbs walls for outs, not crashes into them.  As I previously noted, he left Friday's game in the 4th inning.  I finally got a little more information on what happened.  In the bottom of the 3rd inning against Rochester, he made a spectacular catch, robbing Dusty Martin of extra bases...and crashed into the LF wall.  He came out of the game between innings and is listed as day-to-day with concussion-like symptoms.

From the Red Wings' website:

The Wings almost tied the game at one each in the bottom of the second when Brock Peterson hit a deep fly ball to left field, but was robbed of at least a double as Chris Duffy made a nice jumping grab at the wall. Duffy burned the Wings yet again the following inning, robbing Martin of extra bases, this time lunging into the left field wall. Duffy would be taken out of the game the next inning and replaced with Melvin Dorta.

I hope it's not too serious and he's feeling better soon!

May 1, 2010

Did I expect Chris to keep hitting like he did the first week of the season?  Well, no...but one can hope, right?  After a scorching start to the season, and a small injury last weekend, he's cooled down a little.

During the April 28 game against Rochester, he went hitless, but drew 2 walks and did come around to a run.  He went 1 for 5 the next day, again scoring a run, but also striking out three times...I know, it happens.

One thing I didn't want to see and I don't have much information on is Chris coming out of yesterday's game in the 3rd inning because of an injury.  Right now, there's nothing specific on the type of injury.  All I've got is the game log from www.milb.com which indicated an injury delay after he made a catch, then him being replaced defensively by Melvin Dort.  I hope it's nothing serious and he's able to get back out there soon!

April 28, 2010

Duffy missed the games on April 23 and April 24...partially I think to give him a breather and partially, it turns out because he had a slight ankle injury -- the latter of those is the reason why I get anxious when I don't see his name in the lineup on two consecutive games.  Anyway, he returned to the lineup on the 25th as the DH for the Iron Pigs and went hitless.  The next game was rained out and the Lehigh Valley team moved on to Rochester.

So, reinstalled in leftfield last night, Chris proceeded to only go 1 for 3, but that "1" was a 2-RBI double,  bringing his RBI total for the season to 15 -- that's good for 5th overall in the league.  He also walked and scored a run.

He is in the lineup today, in left, for the afternoon game against Rochester.

April 23, 2010

They had a good game in Lehigh Valley last night, with a 12-3 win for the Iron Pigs.  Duffy went 3 for 5, with 2 RBI's, a walk and scored 2 runs...and raised his average to .322!  Nice!

A single, double, and triple in the fourth inning by Chris Duffy, John Mayberry and Maza respectively, accounted for two more runs and 6-0 lead.
After Pawtucket scratched out two runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap to four, the ‘Pigs offense buried any hopes they may have garnered of a late-inning comeback with a six run bottom of the seventh.  Duffy, Dewayne Wise and Cody Ransom all produced run-scoring doubles in the frame.

And this from the Phillies Minor League roundup:

3-3, tie 4th place, International League North Division ... CF Chris Duffy hit .280 with 7 hits, 4 RBI in 6 games ...

April 22, 2010

Okay, better late than never.

Highlights from the April 20 game, with Duffy's throw to home. Again -- SWEET!

And he is in the lineup tonight for the final game of the homestand against Pawtucket.

Box score for game starting at 7:05pm, Eastern Time.

April 22, 2010

Duffy went 1 for 4 in last night's loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox, or PawSox.  Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka started for Pawtucket as part of a rehab assignment.  That brings Duff's average down to .296 for the young season.

A few things from the Allentown Morning-Call's article on Rich Thompson, who found himself knocked down in the depth chart this season...

But with Chris Duffy, Dewayne Wise and John Mayberry Jr. ahead of him, Thompson understands his inactivity so far.

''Duff's probably been our MVP so far, or maybe Junior. And D-wise is an exciting player at the plate and in the field,'' Thompson said. ''It's not like there's three bums out there. The guys out there are pretty good. I'm confident what I can do, and it's a long year

April 21, 2010

Okay, so the birthday boy went hitless last night in Lehigh Valley's 2-1 win over Syracuse, but he made the highlight reel...um...if they have a hightlight reel for AAA ball.

From the Allentown Morning Call:

The IronPigs (5-7) are still scuffling for runs -- just five over the last three games.

But they made the most of the two they got in the first three innings and held on behind five pitchers and SportsCenter-worthy defense.

Most spectacular were two Chiefs getting nailed at the plate in the third inning -- the first on a strong throw by leftfielder Chris Duffy, who would later add a diving catch, and the second coming on a gun-down from center by Dewayne Wise.

''We have two centerfielders out there, actually three,'' Wise said. ''Duffy made a great play on the line, and I was able to make a good throw also.''
One word from me -- SWEET!  When I get a chance, I'll look for any video that may be out there and add it in.  But really -- got to LOVE the defense as much as the offense!

April 20, 2010 -- Happy 30th Birthday, Chris!

Due to computer issues, I know I am extremely behind on updating this site...and after waiting so long, I have had things to update!

Let's start with the good -- no Great! start Chris has had for AAA Lehigh Valley!  Over the course of eleven games, he is batting .318, with a home run, a triple, and four doubles, having scored scored eight runs and driven eleven.  With the exception of one game thus far this young season, he's been the leadoff guy for the Iron Pigs.

The Iron Pigs website has a few highlights as well

I will get back to regular updates...I promise!  But I wanted to be sure to wish Chris a Happy Birthday!  Keep up the good work!

April 13, 2010

I'll add highlights and post-game stuff later, but thought I'd put in the MiLB gameday link now, for those that want to, or can, follow along at work.

April 12, 2010

I apologize for the tardiness of getting this site updated.  As if April 5, Chris was officially made a member of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs roster, the AAA team for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Since then, lots has happened!

Lehigh Valley played their first game on April 8, opening against Syracuse.  They lost the game 8-7, in the 9th, but more importantly -- to me anyway -- is that Chris finished the day going 2 for 5, with a double and a run scored, starting the season with a .400 average.

April 9 was also a 9th inning loss to Syracuse, but Duffy had a fantastic day at the plate!  He went 3 for 4, falling a home run short of the cycle.  He drove in 3 runs and finished the day with a .556 average.

From the Iron Pigs website:

Chris Duffy had a huge day for the 'Pigs at the plate but it wasn't enough as errors and lack of timely hitting cost Lehigh Valley a chance for their first win.

Overshadowed by the poor defense was the outstanding day at the plate by IronPigs left fielder Chris Duffy. Duffy finished a home run shy of the cycle and drove in three of the four IronPigs runs. Down 3-0 in the fifth, Duffy delivered with a two-run double to pull the ‘Pigs within a run.
The 29-year-old Duffy re-tied the game at four in the seventh, lacing a one-out triple to the right field corner scoring Brian Bocock from third. However, he would be left stranded at third after Wilson Valdez and Tracy each grounded out.
Duffy has reached base in six of his first 10 plate appearances and has three extra-base hits in the first two games of the season

April 10...um...yeah, another 1-run loss, this time 8-7, in extra innings but again, Duffy has the hot bat...okay, not as hot as the previous day, but he did get that HR he missed, and it was with a man on to tie the game in the 9th

April 11...The first win of the season!

Chris Duffy, one of the offensive stars for the IronPigs early this season, provided another important hit on Sunday, a two-run, line drive single to left that chased home Luis Maza and Hoover, who both reached via base hits in the fifth. A Mayberry sacrifice fly two batters later, put the ‘Pigs in front 4-3.

Duffy, who had a hit in each of the first four games, hit .368 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBI in the series

April 12...that would be tonight's game, folks.  They traveled from Syracuse to Pawtucket, to play the PawSox.  Another close game, losing to the Red Sox AAA team 6-5.  But again, not because of Chris Duffy...

After PawSox closer Fernando Cabrera entered for Embree, Chris Duffy lofted a long sacrifice fly to center that brought the ‘Pigs to within a run. But Luis Maza struck out swinging, ending the game and sending the ‘Pigs to their fourth, one-run loss of the season.

Chris Duffy leads the team with a five-game hitting streak. During the streak Duffy has hit .348 with three doubles, a triple, home run and team-leading nine RBI

Pretty sweet, if you ask me!  As for his defense, he has been charged with 1 error, in the opener.  He started all four of the games against Syracuse in left field, and tonight's game against Pawtucket found him roamin CF for the first time.  Kind of makes me wonder what he wasn't doing right in Clearwater to cause him to be re-assigned to minor league camp without so much as one start during Grapefruit League play.  Yes, I'm still grumbling about that.  ;-)

March 19, 2010

Well, I can't say I'm happy...Chris has already been sent to the minor league camp by the Phillies, and his only game appearance was in the pre-Grapefruit League game against Florida State.  I don't know how they can make any determinations without him seeing any game action, but I don't make the big bucks for those decisions, so I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait.

Hopefully, I'll have some update from the minor league games to post soon.

March 12, 2010

So...here we are, two full weeks into Spring Training.  I had the chance to go down to Florida for a week and was able to spend a day in Clearwater at the Phillies' training facility there.  Not my idea of Florida weather, with the cool-ish wind, but it was sunny and not a sign of snow or ice anywhere and that was good enough for me.  Well, that and getting a chance to catch some spring baseball.

First, thank you to Chris for stopping to talk to me for 5 minutes, after his day was done.  It means a great deal to me...so thanks.

Observations?  He looked great, though having lived in Pittsburgh, it hurt seeing him in a Phillie uniform, of all things, but at least he's out on the field, getting a chance.

He's played in one exhibition game, against Florida State, before Grapefruit League play started, where he came in to pinch hit for the DH, Greg Dobbs.  He made 2 plate appearances, walking once and hitting a Sac-fly the 2nd time, and earned 2 RBI's in the process.  The Phillies went on to win that game 13-6.

I'm hoping for some game action shortly and I'll keep you all posted when that happens.

I've added a few new photos, so enjoy!

February 15

Happy (baseball) New Year!  With a pitchers and catchers due to report later this week, and position players reporting next week, it's almost time for the 2010 baseball year to get underway.

I'll be heading down to Florida next week...a welcome warm weather break from the cold here in the Midwest...and I hope to have a few updates from there.

December 29

Okay, so it came as no big surprise that Chris parted ways with the Brewers organization before the winter meetings earlier this month.  He hadn't played since the first part of June.  I have to admit that I was afraid no one else would take a chance on Duffy and give in another opportunity.

I'm very glad that I was wrong.

On December 11, he signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, which included an invitation to spring training in Clearwater, FL.  I hope he has as good, if not a better spring, in 2010 than he had in 2009 and is able to crack the major league roster.

I am very excited and will try to get to see him in Florida while I'm down to see the Pirates spring training as well.

Thanks to Mike for sending me a link and reminding me to post the good news!

I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season.

Here is a link to the Phillies story on the sigining.

Thank you and Happy New Year everyone!

July 23

This may very well be the last entry on Chris Duffy this season and that makes me very sad.  Nothing official, mind you, but the following is from Tom Haudricourt's Q & A this week:

Q: Preston S, Sturgeon Bay - Hi Tom, Thanks for answering my question. Any more news on Chris Duffy and why he isn't playing for Nashville yet. And, any chance we see him in September for the call-ups if he does end up reporting?

A: Tom Haudricourt - It doesn't look like Duffy will be returning to the Brewers' system this year. He has some sort of personal problem that is taking time to work out and I'd say we won't see him again in 2009. Whether the Brewers would offer him a deal for 2010 is doubtful.

No more information than that.  If I see anything else, or hear anything else, I will post it.  In the mean time, I'll try to keep up with Brendan's progess through the Diamondbacks' system.

July 18

I'm one of those for whom no news isn't good news, so I sent an email to the Nashville Sounds Media department last week. The response I received was that Chris Duffy is still technically on their roster, but still on the Temporary Inactive list.  Does that make me feel better?  Um, no.  But I understand there is only so much information they can give out.

Again, I would like to say that I hope everyone in the Duffy household is well.  And I sincerely hope to see Chris out there playing again as soon as he feels ready.

June 27

No new news on when Chris will report back to Nashville, but I have received a bit of interest on brothers Brendan and Dan. So, I added a new section, "It's a Family Thing" that I will keep as updated as possible in the mean time.

June 24

I know...it's been awhile, and it may be awhile longer.  I was perusing Milwaukee's online papers today and found this, in the J-SOnline:

Centerfielder Chris Duffy, assigned outright to Class AAA Nashville on May 26, has been placed on that club's inactive list. Duffy went home to Arizona for the birth of a child after playing three games with Nashville and never rejoined the club. Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said Duffy's absence was "a delicate issue" that he could not detail. "All I can tell you is he's dealing with some personal issues," said Ash, who did not know when Duffy might return.

I hope everyone in the Duffy household is doing well...obviously their health and well-being trump anything on the field.  Take care, Mr. Duffy.

June 7

While Chris Duffy is spending some very necessary new-dad time with his family  after the newest arrival of the Duffy clan,  I thought I would post news on another Duffy front.

Younger brother Brendan Duffy was drafted last year by the Arizona Diamond Backs and played for the Single-A short season affiliate the Yakima Bears in 2008.  This year, he's playing Single-A ball for the South Bend Silver Eagles. I have Google alerts that send me items that even mention Chris to my email and I was pleasantly surprised to get the following the other day:

From the South Bend Tribune:

Four South Bend Silver Hawks have been named to play in the Midwest League All-Star Game, June 23 at Clinton, Iowa.

South Bend outfielder Brendan Duffy has been named as a starter for the East, while infielder Reynaldo Navarro and pitchers Ryan Cook and T.J. Hose were named as reserves.
................

Duffy has been in the top ten in the Midwest League in batting for most of the season. He currently leads the Silver Hawks with a .321 batting average, .415 on-base percentage, and 12 stolen bases.

Duffy was drafted in the 41st round of the 2008 draft from Oral Roberts University and is the younger brother of Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Chris Duffy.

Pretty cool, huh?

So, needing something to focus on, I let my fingers do the walking.  Here is more information on the younger Duffy:

Brendan finished 2008 with a .274 average, in 53 games and 164 At-Bats.  Of his 45 hits, 5 of them were doubles, 4 of them were triples and one a home-run.  He scored 33 runs and drove in 11, not to mention stealing 17 bases, being caught 5 times.

And he was chosen as the Silver Hawks' Player of the Month for May.  Click here for the link to that item.

His player page is here for complete up-to-date season stats.

Just trying to stay busy and thought I'd share that.

June 5

The reason that one Chris Duffy is on the Temporary Inactive list?

He has "returned to Arizona home following birth of child".  That, taken from the game notes for the Sounds.  Thanks also to the reader who emailed me yesterday to let me know as well.

Congratulations to Chris and Kristin on their newest family member.  I hope both mom and baby are healthy.

June 3

I'm trying not to panic.  I was confused...I figured to see lots of starts right away.  But no "Chris Duffy, OF" starts since the first game of the double header on Saturday.  I mean, that was the point, right?  For him to play.

Then just today...just 2 minutes ago, I checked the transactions page for the Sounds and hoping everything is okay:

June 3

OF Chris Duffy placed on temporary inactive list; P Chase Wright added from Brevard County

I found this from the Nashville Sounds' website. No stats...I'm working on those.

And you can click here for a blog entry on Duffy's expected appearance in Nashville, and here for a photo and a short recap of his debut in Nashville.

Stay tuned...

May 31

Last night it was a twi-light double header for the Sounds against the Omaha Royals.  Duffy started the first game and came in late (6th inning of a 7-inning game) as a pinch-runner/designated hitter.

In game 1, Duffy officially went 0 for 2, but had a sacrifie and walked  He also came around to score the run that put the Sounds ahead for the first time all night and it would be the winning run, thouugh they scored 3 more after.  He came up with 2 outs and drew the walk before scoring from 1st on a single Alcides Escobar.  I did manage to catch the audio for that game and the announcers for the Sounds (sorry, I didn't catch the names...I was multi-tasking) remarked on Duffy's "amazing speed".  Very nice.

Game 2 was really just a pinch-running appearance that didn't go anywhere. They didn't bat around again after the substitution in the 2-1 loss.

Click here for the recap from the Sounds' website.  The box scores for both games are both linked at the bottom of the page.

I'm trying to find some photos, but as of yet, haven't had any luck.  I'm spoiled by Indianapolis and Altoona last year...they both had very good multimedia links on their websites.  They also don't yet have a player page set up for him.  Once they do, I'll post that link on the stats page.

Next on tap is a 2pm, Central Time game closing out the 4-game series against Omaha. Here's to a break-out game!  Until later...

May 29

Yay!  First day in Nashville and Chris Duffy gets the start in centerfield.  I know it's AAA, but it's not AA-Altoona, either...not to knock Altoona -- it's a nice park and a great place to watch baseball -- but Duffy is beyond AA-level ball.  He's beyond AAA level too, but at least he's getting to play.

The facts:  He went 1 for 4, had a sac-bunt, 2 strikeouts and was caught stealing.  He had 6 put-outs in the field as well.  Sounds like it was a pretty good night for Duffy.

Tomorrow is a double-header against AAA-Omaha.  Hopefully there will be more on the Sounds' website this weekend.

May 28

I'm still waiting...like I'm sure others are...for Chris Duffy's debut with the Nashville Sounds.  I was concerned that he hadn't yet been added to the official roster, but then I found this as part of the Sounds press information for today's game in Tacoma:

DUFFY TO JOIN SOUNDS TOMORROW: Outfielder Chris Duffy, who was designated for assignment by Milwaukee on Friday when recently acquired OF Jody Gerut was activated, cleared waivers and accepted his outright assignment to the Sounds yesterday. He made Milwaukee’s Opening Day roster after attending spring training as a non-roster player. Duffy opened the year by batting .125 (4-for-32) with three RBIs in 19 games for the Brewers. He is expected to join Nashville for its homestand opener tomorrow, at which time a roster move will be necessary to activate him.

So, I would guess sometime this weekend he should get a start or two...or three...or...well, you get the idea.

May 26

He's going to Nashville...

Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash reports that outfielder Chris Duffy has agreed to accept an assignment to Class AAA Nashville and will report there tomorrow.

The Brewers designated Duffy for assignment last week after trading for San Diego outfielder Jody Gerut. That gave the Brewers 10 days to trade Duffy, release him or have him report to the minors.

GM Doug Melvin said from the beginning that he wanted to keep Duffy in the farm system to keep depth in center and he has done so. Duffy was batting .125 in a reserve role at the time of the DFA

(Tom Haudricourt, Journal-Sentinel)

He should get to play more now.  Tony Gwynn Jr. was the staring Centerfielder with the Sounds, and he is now in San Diego, so it's my assumption that Duffy will assume that role.  Good Luck, Duff!

Duffy facing tough decision

Team designates him for assignment

Minneapolis - Pinch-hitting is a lot more difficult that it looks.

Brad Nelson found out first. Chris Duffy found out second.

Both found out the hard way.

About a week after the Milwaukee Brewers sent Nelson to Class AAA Nashville - he eventually opted for free agency rather than take the demotion - Duffy was designated for assignment. He has until Tuesday to decide whether he'll take the assignment to Nashville or become a free agent.

The move was made because the Brewers traded minor-league outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. to the San Diego Padres for outfielder Jody Gerut, who took Duffy's spot on the roster.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Duffy was a victim of a lack of playing time.

"He's in the same situation as Brad Nelson: He didn't get enough playing time," Melvin said. "I talked to him and tried telling him the best thing was to accept assignment, but that's ultimately his call.

"We're not looking to move him. We're looking to keep him."

If Duffy accepts the assignment, he will play regularly at Nashville because Gwynn, the starting centerfielder, is gone. In 32 at-bats this season with the Brewers, Duffy hit just .125 with 12 strikeouts.

As a substitute or pinch-hitter Duffy was 1 for 12 with three walks.

"Pinch-hitting is just hard to do sometimes," Melvin said.

Manager Ken Macha said it was hard for him to find innings for Duffy because "it's tough to go up to guys and tell them they're going to have a day off and it's April."

But as the calendar gets ready to flip from May to June, Macha said he'll start to give more days off to centerfielder Mike Cameron and rightfielder Corey Hart, allowing Gerut to see more playing time than was allotted for Duffy.

"He's going to get more of an opportunity to play than Duffy," Macha said. "I'll be able to get 'Cam' some time off, and Corey. And (Ryan) Braun might need a day off, too.

May 22

Okay I've been negligent...very.  I'll give you the good news before the bad...Since my last entry, Duffy did get another start, on May 14 against the Marlins. He went 1 for 4, with a hit and scored a run.  He played  RF and did get an assist on a put-out at the plate.   Video can be found here.  It was a nice play...Really it was.

Okay, that brings me to the bad news...that was the last game that Chris appeared in for the Brewers.  Today, he was designated for assignment (DFA) to Nashville.  This was after the Brewers acquired Jody Gerut via trade with the Padres...for Tony Gwynn Jr.  Go figure.

I get it...he's not been hitting well off the bench, but when he has hit, it's counted.  But it's baseball and they want production.  Not like he got a lot of playing time.  So how am I supposed to take this quote by Ken Macha?

"[Gerut is] going to get more of an opportunity to play than Duffy," manager Ken Macha said. "So I'll be able to give Cam some time off and Corey. You always hope that Braun can play every day, but he might need a day off, too."

Why is this happening all of a sudden?  Miffed?  Heck yeah!  If Chris isn't, I am on his behalf...that just doesn't sound right to me.

So now we wait...7-10 days, I think...for him to clear waivers.  I remember this from last season.  It was not cool.  At least maybe now he'll get to play -- everyday, which I think he deserves a chance to do.

I'll be adding photos and hopefully some videos this weekend.

May 11

Today was an off-day for the Brewers, but I thought I'd do a little house-keeping.  The updated player page is available in the Stats section, as the May schedule for the Brewers.  I have a few other things to update and I'll get to them.

This weekend, I did find a link that had video for one of the catches Duffy made in Pittsburgh last Monday -- the one that robbed Adam LaRoche of extra bases.

Click the link below and enjoy... Again, I have to ask, He's not starting because...?

And I found this on You Tube as well...

May 8

There wasn't any good news from last night's game, as far as Duffy is concerned...he did get a pinch-hitting appearance, but he's having problems getting the bat going off the bench.  I feel his frustration and I hope he finds his stroke.

Got to love someone who enjoys his work...

From the Brewers' site...

"Chris Duffy doesn't mind playing defense. In fact, he kind of enjoys it. Actually, it's his pride and joy. Even Duffy, though, didn't think he had enough time to make what turned out to be an outstanding, highlight-reel grab off the bat of Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan in Wednesday's game against Cincinnati.

...

"For me, defense is my No. 1 thing," he said. "It seems like in the last few years, hitting has overcome defense, and they'll throw anybody in the outfield if you can hit. For me, I take a lot of pride in playing defense. I know what it feels like to have a hit taken away from you."  "

I tried to get this done last night, but I couldn't wait for the stories to post, so it's late...sorry.  Once again, I scanned the starting lineup, but wasn't suprised to not see "Chris Duffy" listed.  He did get to play...and actually in Center Field for a change.   As the Brewers were routing the Reds, Macha gave Mike Cameron part of the night off.

I'll shut up and let the video do the talking...

Video...click here (be patient and watch the whole thing)

And he's not starting because...?

May 6

Okay, okay, okay...I'm woefully behind and I've got no reason.  Well, almost no reason.  I spent Monday and Tuesday nights at PNC Park, since the Brewers were in town for a short 2-game series.  Was I conflicted? Well yeah!

I'd be lying if I wasn't relieved Duffy wasn't scheduled to start...Pirate fan, remember?

Monday night, Bill Hall, who started in Left Field (since Ryan Braun had stayed in Milwaukee having an MRI done) for the Brew Crew came out with a tender hamstring and out trotted #16.  I was field level, on the right field line and nearly dropped my scorecard.  In fact, after that I think I forgot my scorecard, as I was biting my nails the rest of the night.

He made an absolutely fantastic catch deep in left, which goes to 410 at the Northside Notch, to rob Adam LaRoche of what otherwise would have been extra bases.  The part of me wanting Chris to do well was giddy.  The Pirate fan?  Totally bummed.

I was on the edge of my seat, the Pirates up 3-1, the Brewers had the bases loaded...and it was Duffy's turn to bat.  I was prepared to watch the entire at-bat through my fingers...Until Ryan Braun came out to pinch hit.  I know I said he was in Milwaukee...I guess pretty much everyone except those in the Brewers' dugout  did too.  Since Chris was 0 and 2 on the night, I wanted him to get a hit...but not really in that spot.  But with Braun in, I didn't have to worry...Duffy's night was over.

Tuesday, he didn't get a start either, but he did come in later as part of a double switch, this time in right field.  Of course, Tuesday, I was sitting by the dugout, not along the right field line, like I was the night before...I'm not complaining...just saying.

As expected...at least by me...he was spectacular defensively.  He robbed Adam LaRoche -- again -- of at least 1 base hit, and got to a ball in right center that not many guys would have tracked down.  But it WAS PNC...where he started for 2 consecutive seasons...if not for the entire season either time...he's slightly familiar with how it plays.

His only at-bat was a sacrifice bunt.  I was sitting right even with the bag at first...WOW! Can he fly down the line or what?  He nearly beat the throw.  I heard the ball smack the glove as he was half a step away.

I have photos I took both nights and will get them loaded in soon.

There aren't any video hightlights...you have to watch the entire game to see that wonderful work.

May 3, part 2

Today was the first day the roof was open at Miller Park and a good day for Duffy to get a start in LF for the ailing Ryan Braun, right?  Wrong.  Ken Macha decided to give Brad Nelson the start today, I guess to try to make up for the absence of Braun's power.  I won't say anything except to give you the game recap as it relates to my favorite outfielder:

Macha had him enter the game in the 7th inning as a defensive replacement -- fair enough...he IS Spiderman, right?  Anyway, one of the three homeruns that were hit in the 7th inning went in his direction, but he would have had to have been Superman to catch it, since it landed in the seats of the 2nd deck.  He did have one put out in the 8th, where as always, he made a fine catch.

The best part for him was the bottom of the 8th. He comes to the plate, bases loaded and 1 out.  I cringe as he swings at the first pitch...Let's just say I thought it was a little too low to swing at.  Second pitch is high...at the letters, for the ump who called him out yesterday on a similar pitch...for a ball. He hits the 1-1 pitch to the right side.  If not for a nice play by Arizona's second-baseman, Felipe Lopez, it goes through for a single.  Lopez completes the out at first, but Duffy does get credited with what would become the game winning RBI.

Hell's Bells plays as Trevor Hoffman completes the save and they do that pull-the-shirt-out thing.  Game over.  Brewers win.  Thanks to an RBI ground out by Chris Duffy.  Power isn't everything.

A few quotes from today's game:

click here for the entire story.

Duffy's sharp grounder to second was enough to score Hardy, and Hoffman fanned two before getting Conor Jackson on a tapper in front of the plate to end the game.

"It was nice to see Duffy put the ball in play there," Brewers manager Ken Macha said. "The second baseman made a great play on Duffy's ball, but fortunately we were able to capitalize on it. [Duffy] put the ball in play, that was key."

From wisn.com

Chris Duffy's run-scoring groundout in the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner, as Milwaukee bested Arizona, 4-3, earning a split of this four-game set.

And from mlb.com

Duffy delivers in Brewers' 11th-hour win

"I'm going to go ahead and be excited about today and smile a little bit," said Duffy, a former Pittsburgh Pirates starter who hasn't had much to smile about while adjusting to a new role as a bench player after two years of injuries. Duffy earned a rare start on Saturday night because Braun is sidelined by a stiff back, and he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Brad Nelson started in left field on Sunday and went 0-for-3 before Duffy entered to strengthen the defense in the seventh.

"You wouldn't have caught me smiling yesterday," Duffy said Sunday as the Brewers packed for Pittsburgh and the start of a two-city, four-game trip. "That's why baseball is so great. I didn't have to wait a week to be able to turn it around."

Smile away, Chris...I know I am.  I'll be in the stands at PNC on Monday night as the Brewers visit the Pirates.

May 3

Ryan Braun's back is bothering him...and while that may seem like a bad thing for the Brewers, it does give Chris Duffy a chance to play.  He was slotted in for the start on Saturday, after Braun was a no-go for back stiffness that is related to the intercoastal strain that slowed him in the WBC and spring training.

The bad tonight was that the Brewers had to face Dan Haren of the Diamondbacks.  They managed 1 run, but that was about it.  Duffy struck out 3 times, though the called strike-3 on one at-bat was clearly high...and Chris let the umpire know it.  Not many Brewers reached base with Haren, and later Qualls, on the hill.

He had a couple of nice plays in the outfield, especially early on when the sun was blinding him.  He managed to track it off the bat, through the 6pm sunlight that was streaming in, then into the shade and made a great catch.

No highlight reel tonight...but I'm crossing my fingers that there will be more.

May 2

WOOHOO!  Bottom of the 7th, game tied at 1, runner at 2nd and the pitcher's spot is next. Wait!  A pinch hitter is announced...now, I have to admit at this point that I was watching, and could tell from the overhead look who was on deck before the announcement was made -- it didn't make me any less excited though.  Duffy is announced and takes the first pitch for a ball.  The next pitch, he reaches down and sends a little flare single into left field.  It's a beautiful thing!  Not only does he get his 2nd hit, but his first RBI this season, as the runner, Bill Hall, is able to score from 2nd.

That was my baseball joy last night.  Just imagine how much more joy there could be if Duffy got more playing time?  I'd better not go there, or I'll get giddy just at the thought.

MLB has upgraded the team sites and player pages.  Click HERE for the link to Duffy's.

April 30

Somehow I knew that Duffy would get a start against the Pirates -- not just a pinch-hitting appearance.  He hadnt gotten a start since the first Sunday of the season, so he was due.   Let's just say, it was a difficult series for me to watch in many ways.

Good stuff though...Chris got his first hit of the season as he doubled down the first baseline.  And as always, good play in the outfield.  He nearly cut down Andy LaRoche at 2nd as LaRoche broke up a No-Hitter being tossed by Yovani Gallardo.

So, as of right now, Duffy's sporting a .100 avg, with a double, a run scored, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts and and OPS of .508.  It's not the prettiest line, but given the amount of playing time he isn't getting, it's a start.

And there were these pieces from the Pittsburgh papers:

From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: (Obviously before game 3)

Brewers reserve outfielder Chris Duffy is hitless in seven at-bats this season, but the former Pirate feels fortunate to be in any clubhouse right now.

"Obviously, for the time I've missed, it's a blessing to be back up here," he said.

Duffy, the Pirates' Opening Day center fielder in 2007, underwent shoulder surgery in late August 2007. He played only 30 games in 2008 in the Pirates farm system and was out of baseball. But, with a good word from Brewers coach Dale Sveum, who knew Duffy from the Pirates' minor-league system, he signed with the Brewers.

Duffy, who turned 29 last week, hit .311 in spring training as a non-roster invitee and made the team.

Duffy still has fond memories of Pittsburgh.

"My time there, in the minor leagues, it was really special for me," Duffy said. "I had a great time. ... It was a little tough yesterday, rooting against those guys. Coming up, years of having their back and wanting them to do well. It was weird. I want those guys to do well."

MILWAUKEE -- Starting in center field yesterday was a 5-foot-10, 180-pound speedster and left-handed batter who made his major league debut in 2005 and showed Pirates fans a pile of promise.

No, it wasn't Nate McLouth. It was Chris Duffy. For the Brewers.

"You build those real good clubhouse friendships," Duffy said, talking about how he enjoyed catching up with old Pirates pals in this Miller Park series. "It kind of brought me back a little."

Duffy and McLouth came up through the system together: Class A Lynchburg, Class AA Altoona, Class AAA Indianapolis, the majors with the Pirates. When Duffy batted .341 with the Pirates in 2005 and McLouth made his debut at .257, they appeared to have a pecking order -- leadoff and backup.

Duffy was the Pirates' opening day center fielder in 2006 and '07, then opened last season on the disabled list before slowly spinning from management's plans. Duffy batted .336 in September 2006 and recaptured his promise after he left the club for much of the summer. But then he had shoulder surgery in '07 and played only 30 games total in Altoona and Indianapolis last season before being released in November.

"I was at the point in my career, they had a plan, Neal [Huntington, the Pirates general manager] and the guys. They were kind of doing things a little differently," Duffy said. "I understood that. You miss so much time, you kind of fall away.

"I think it was good for me to get a fresh start."

On Dec. 18, he signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee -- roughly two months to the day before McLouth signed a three-year, $15.75 million deal after his Gold Glove season. Yesterday, Duffy was off the Brewers' bench and penciled into the No. 2 spot.

"Other than the opportunity [to be in the majors], I want to be healthy," Duffy said. "That was the No. 1 thing. It didn't matter where I played, I just wanted to be healthy. So far so good."

Does he feel envy toward McLouth?

"I never do. I couldn't be more happy for him -- real excited," Duffy said.

"He was in the position where he wasn't getting the chance. Playing with him all those years, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that he couldn't play every day in the big leagues."

Hopefully, I won't have to wait another week for something news-worthy to post here.  With the Brewers scheduled to visit Pittsburgh this coming Monday for a 2-game series, that shouldn't be a problem.  My plan right now is to be at both games, weather permitting...stay tuned!

April 24...okay really early April 25

I guess Macha doesn't give his bench guys as many starts as John Russell does for the Pirates.  I've seen maybe 1 pinch hit appearance this week, and that's it!  I was fairly sure Duffy would get a start on Wednesday, but alas, no.

Hopefully one day this weekend...before the Pirates get to Milwaukee?  Please?

April 20
I'm not slacking...I promise!  There hasn't been anything to post about.

Today, I make a small exception.  Why?  It's Chris' birthday!

Happy Birthday Chris!  Enjoy the day off on the short trip from New York to Philadelphia and I look forward to seeing you in the lineup soon.

That's it...Have a good one folks.

April 17

Okay, I know...I've been a baaaaad site administrator.  No updates at all this week.  Well, there really hasn't been much to update.  Duffy hasn't started a game since Sunday night, where he went hitless.

Although, on Monday, in Cincinnati, he walked.  He was stealing 2nd when Kendall hit a fly ball to center. Duffy was already at the bag when he saw the ball was caught and did a 180-degree turn and hauled back to 1st base.  The throw by Taveras bounced away from Votto, so he reversed gears again and just beat the throw to 2nd, standing up.  He was safe, but then Counsel grounded out to first for the out.  It was a nice display of his speed, if nothing else.

Chris wasn't called on to do anything in Tuesday or Wednesday's games, and Thursday was an off day for the Brewers.

Tonight, he pinch hit for Bush 7th.  He reached on a fielder's choice, reaching 2nd base on a wild pitch, but again was left stranded on base.  That was it.

*sigh*  This is sort of what I was afraid of...him not playing every day.  What's better?  Making the major league team, or being able to play every day in Nashville?  Don't get me wrong -- I'm ecstatic he made the big league team, but I'm also selfish enough to want him to be an everyday player.  What's wrong with that?

Hopefully there will be a spot start some time this weekend...stay tuned.

April 12

Good news:

Duffy gets a start

Macha tinkered with his lineup a little bit against Dempster, inserting Craig Counsell at third base and in the second spot in the lineup, and giving Chris Duffy his first start in center.

"I wanted to get a few more left-handed hitters in there," Macha said.

It wasn't easy for Macha to put together a lineup because few of his players had had any success against Dempster, other than catcher Jason Kendall (.432 batting average). Ryan Braun was hitting .133 against him, J.J. Hardy .111, Corey Hart .071 and Rickie Weeks .222.

On the hitting chart, hitters who fare well against pitchers are shaded in red and those who don't are shaded in blue.

"We've got a bunch of blue boxes in there," Macha said.

Bad news:

He went 0 for 4, with 2 strike outs, a fly out to center and a pop out to third.  His on-base percentage plummeted from .500 to .167, but that's because he only had 2 plate appearances before this game, walking once and striking out once.

Bright side:

He made a couple of good plays in the outfield, though the first batter in the first inning, Soriano, hit a homerun over his head...even he knew there was no way he was going to get to it.

Dempster is a good pitcher and not a lot of the Brewers got hits off of him.  And not a lot of players get a ton of hits in their first game...it's early yet, and there will be more starts to follow.  Just as long as Duffy keeps that defense steady, the rest will come.

For my fellow Pirates' fans...if you're still out there...I will be at PNC tomorrow for the home opener and plan on posting photos.

April 11

An interesting thing from yesterday's Journal-Sentinel.  It seems you folks there in Milwaukee were eager to get the season started and got to the ballpark before the lots were open for your pre-game parties.  As a result, the players had problems getting into the stadium...

Because of the team's late return from the West Coast, manager Ken Macha allowed players to report to the ballpark later than normal to get some rest. The problem with that plan was that parking lots did not open until 11 a.m. CDT.

The long lines of sitting vehicles made it difficult for many players to get into the ballpark at the time they expected. Three hours before game time, just five players were in the home clubhouse: Craig Counsell, Ryan Braun, Todd Coffey, Chris Duffy and Bill Hall.

I'm not saying the same thing won't happen here in Pittsburgh on Monday...They start tailgating here at 9am for a Steelers game at 4pm, and I'm sure the lots around PNC that are open for tailgating will be full once they open at 9:30, barbecues firing up and sausages grilling.

More later after the game...hopefully.

April 10

Brewers rally in ninth to clip Cubs

"Chris Duffy walked with one out, and Weeks doubled over the head of Cubs leftfielder Alfonso Soriano to drive in Duffy and tie the score at 3-3. After Weeks alertly went to third on a short wild pitch and Corey Hart walked, Braun hit a hard grounder to shortstop Ryan Theriot."

For the entire article click here.

As you can see by the excerpt above, Duffy saw a little late-game action tonight in the Brewers' home opener.  He actually came in in the top of the 9th inning as part of a double switch, replacing pitcher Todd Coffey, with Carlos Villanueva going into Mike Cameron's spot.

Want to know something else that was great about the walk that Duffy drew tonight?  It ticked off Lou Piniella...going by this article on mlb.com.  I'm not the biggest Cubs fan, so that just makes me feel warm and tingly all over.

So, he's had his first strikeout of the season, his first walk, first run-scored and inning played in the field.  Now he needs his first hit and RBI.  That's not asking too much now is it?

April 9...Part 2.

So I was wrong.  No start today.  Bummer.  There was an appearance though...a pinch-hit appearance for pitcher Mark DiFelice.  Can you tell by the rather low-key description that it wasn't a great plate appearance?  He struck out with a man on.  Agan...bummer.  Oh well, it's early yet, right?

There was this though, taken from the Journal-Sentinel:

During the five weeks of exhibition season, Casey McGehee, Brad Nelson and Chris Duffy got all of the at-bats they needed in the Milwaukee Brewers' spring camp to make the opening day roster.

Now, it's hurry up and wait.

That's the order of the day for McGehee, Nelson and Duffy, who earned spots on the Brewers' bench and now must sit and bide time until their chance comes.

All three players were regulars throughout their minor-league careers. Duffy is the only one with any real time in the majors, with 193 games and 681 at-bats with Pittsburgh from 2005-'07.

.......

Even then, Duffy played regularly as the Pirates' center fielder, so moving to a reserve role with the Brewers is a new situation for the speedy left-handed hitter.

"I've never really been in this role before," said Duffy, who made the club as a non-roster invitee to camp by batting .311 with eight doubles, two homers, 13 RBI and a .363 on-base percentage in 74 at-bats.

"Getting those at-bats (in spring training) was good because I'm not going to get as many now. At least that gave me a base to work from. Hopefully, I can carry it over."

That is just a piece...for the entire entire piece, click here.

Tomorrow is the Brewers' home opener.  I doubt there will be a Duffy-start tomorrow, but I've got my fingers crossed that he'll get one some point over the weekend.  I'll keepyou all posted.

April 9

I know -- I said Tuesday and here it is Thursday morning.  But really there wasn't anything to add.  Duffy has yet to take the field in this very young season, but I am hoping that changes today, with it being a later game and the Brewers' wanting their starters fresh for the home opener tomorrow.

I did get to watch the season opener in San Francisco, and I couldn't help but wonder how he must have felt standing there in a major league ball park for the first time in a year and a half?   Hopefully, pretty good that he made the team, though I can imagine it being tinged with a bit of bad, since he was a starter before that unfortunate series of injuries.  I hope he just keeps believing in himself and all that talent...the rest will come.

Ooh.  Sorry for going all philosophical there...I wonder about things like that sometimes.  Anyway, I'll check in later...after tonight's game.  It is MLB Network's first Thursay night game...Very cool!

April 4...Okay, really the wee hours of April 5

I managed to stay up and watch the entire 3+ hour game from Los Angeles, despite Vin Scully's best attempts to lull me to sleep.  (MLB Network let me down and broadcast the Angels game, and mlb.tv had the Dodgers feed)  I understand that Mr. Scully is basically a hall of fame baseball announcer and is respected by all, it was really too late for my ears for his style of calling a game.

I rambled...sorry.  No big news about the game itself.  Duffy came in as a late inning replacement...in the 7th for Ryan Braun in left field, had one at-bat and was called out on a foul tip.  I think the ump just wanted to end the inning quicker, personally, because it didn't look like the ball grazed the bat, but whatever.

The big news is this:

There were no surprises as the Brewers finalized their 25-man roster for the start of the season. Non-roster invitee Chris Duffy was added to the 40-man roster, joining Brad Nelson as the backup outfielders.

It's a beautiful thing...the Brewers' 25 man roster

It's too late to break out the Happy Dance tonight, but rest assured, I'll be doing a little jig tomorrow.

Until Tuesday, when the season starts...

April 4

It's a good thing I'm a night owl anyway, because those West Coast games are killer for those of us in the East.  Baseball is the one game I can listen to and visualize on the radio, but even for me that gets difficult after a long day at work, then try staying up to 1:00am.  It suddenly struck me how much easier it was to follow the entire major league schedule when I lived in California.

Let's just say by the time Duffy came up to pinch hit for David Riske in the 8th, noting it on the computer was the last thing on my mind.  ;-)    He walked, improving his on-base percentage to .367.  After that things get odd.  Both Gameday and the MLB box have him playing both 1B and 2B.  Um...yeah, I'm trying to get that verified.  I'll keep you posted.

Tonight is another night game in L.A...10pm for me in the Eastern time zone.  And it is on MLB Network...for those of you in Wisconsin, I'd check your local TV because it may be blacked out.

By this time tomorrow, the roster should be set...I'm crossing fingers and toes that nothing happens to alter anything at this point.

This was in the notes section of this morning's Journal-Sentinel (I like the way it sounded) :

"Gwynn became expendable when non-roster invitee Chris Duffy had a strong camp and earned the job as backup centerfielder. Duffy took a .315 batting average into the Brewers' exhibition game Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with eight doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI.

"He can play center field and he's got some pop in his bat," Macha said. "He hits doubles; he's got some speed, can steal some bases. Those things help us over the course of the season." "

Then there is this line from an MLB story on Tony Gwynn Jr. that is music to my ears...

"The Brewers' 40-man roster stands at 38 players. When Duffy is added Sunday to complete the Opening Day slate, he will be No. 39. "

Though I am sure Gwynn is a fine player and was unfortunately not physically able to play the way Duffy did. I wish him well.

April 2

Okay, so I remembered to breathe sometime today. I should explain...I started holding my breath at some point today as the Journal-Sentinel started posting articles that Tony Gwynn Jr. could, in fact, be out of the Brewers' plans, which would mean Chris Duffy was going to make the 25-man roster.

First, there was this entry, where Tom Haudricourt shared his discussion with Ken Macha and Doug Melvin about why Gwynn hadn't been playing.

That was followed by another entry, outlining AAA-Nashville's signee, including an outfielder brought in from another system.  As the article states, that could signal no one was going to be coming from the big league camp.

If anyone had seen me, my eyes were wide as saucers after reading the first piece.  When the second came out, there was an audible intake of breath, and I started to bite my nails -- what nails I have left.

So you can imagine I was nearly hyperventilating when this third entry was posted.  To say I started to get giddy would be an understatement.

I'm trying REALLY hard to not get over-excited until it's official.  I don't want to jinx it.  Seriously.

But that's hard when there's even an article on MLB.com, which contains the following reaction from the Man himself:

Duffy was happy with his performance in camp. But he had yet to be told whether he had a spot locked up.

"I stayed healthy, and that was the No. 1 thing," said Duffy, who missed big chunks of the past two seasons with injuries, most notably a shoulder injury that required surgery. "This might sound crazy, but my mindset wasn't totally to make the team. I wanted to stay healthy and get ready for the season, wherever that was going to be. That helped me not put pressure on myself. I can't control what they think or what they want, but I can control my own mindset.

"I don't know what they're going to do. At the end, it comes down to the fact that this is a business and that can affect the different decisions that are made. I've been around long enough to understand that."

Um, yeah, trying to stay even-keeled has been pretty difficult all day.

OH!  And there was a game today!  I nearly forgot...forgot to recap, not to watch -- I'm not THAT forgetful.  It was a Brewers' win.  Duffy came in defensively later in the game and had one turn at the plate.  He drew a walk, and stole a base, but was stranded in the bottom of the 8th.   After the game, the team packed up and closed up camp at Maryvale in Phoenix and headed first to Los Angeles, where they will play 2 more pre-season games before heading up the coast to the Bay Area for their opening series with the Giants.

Word is the roster won't be finalized until Sunday.  I'll reserve any possible celebratory dancing until then.

April 1

I've been sitting on my hands, trying to not bite my nails, as rosters are finalized. The Brewers haven't divulged their final additions or cuts yet.

And from the Journal-Sentinel...

"Doug Melvin said the final outfield decisions won't be made until after the two exhibition games in LA this weekend. And he also said the report out of Denver that he has interest in reaquiring centerfielder Scott Podsednik is not true. Podsednik was released by Colorado. "

So, nothing definite until Saturday.  It's going to be a long couple of days.  It's a good thing there are games in the mean time.

I'd better get caught up first...

March 30 vs. the Mariners.

I had another "oops" moment, when I didn't listen because Duffy didn't start...yeah, he came in later on to spell Ryan Braun.  He went 0 for 1, but did draw a walk and scored a run.

March 31 vs. San Diego

This game was actually on TV...MLB Network for me here in Pittsburgh.  Again, Duffy wasn't in the starting lineup, but came in as an injury substituion for Ryan Braun left early with an injury to his throwing hand.  He made some really nice plays in the outfield, while going 1 for 3, stealing a base and driving in a run.

April 1 vs. Arizona

How funny must it be for the Diamondbacks to have an away game in Phoenix?  Anyway, I was lucky enough to see most of this game as well.  Duffy came in again as a mid-game substitution in LF, moving later to CF, after Mike Cameron's day was done.  He had a nice display of power in his first at-bat, sending a fastball over the centerfield fence for his 2nd homerun of the spring.  His next at-bat, he reached on a fielder's choice and got to 2nd on an error, eventually scoring on an double by Steffan Wilson.  He wasn't all golden at the plate...he did leave the bases loaded with 1 out in the 8th, but made up for that with a stellar catch on the warning track in deep center in the top of the 9th.  Nothing flashy like a diving catch, or anything like that, but a solid bead on the ball and good track for the out.  It was a thing of beauty.  Okay, so I'm biased...but I've also been watching the leftfielder for the PIrates make plays more...um...interesting than they need to be, so I appreciate the beauty of a well-played ball.

So, current stats are:  .315 avg, 2 HR's, 8 2B's, 1 3B, 13 RBI's, 39 TB, and 2 SB's.  I'd say he's making it difficult for Doug Melvin and Ken Macha to send him to Nashville, wouldn't you?

When I start seeing more clips, I'll post the links...I haven't seen anything besides the interview a couple of weeks ago.

Tomorrow's game is on MLB Network at 4pm, Eastern time, as is Saturday's game, which is scheduled for the first pitch to be thrown at 10:00pm, Eastern Time.  Those of you in Milwaukee will have to check local listings, as those may be blacked out.

March 29

I may have said this before, if I have...too bad, I'm going to repeat it -- there's something just all around right in the world when there's baseball being played.  And it's even better when it's on TV...for those of us NOT in Arizona or Florida right about now.

Quick recap of yesterday's game...It was a VERY good day for Chris.  2 for 4, with a double and a run scored.  According to the Brewers' announcers, the flyballs were fun because of the wind, and there were a couple of good plays by Duffy in the outfield.  I hope that's good enough for Brewers' management to see h could fill in at least defensively for Braun, or Cameron, if needed.  He doesn't have the homerun potential of either of them, but he gets his hits and gets on base and that's as important...right?

Today...well, I sort of dropped the ball today.  I didn't see "Chris Duffy" listed in the starting lineup, so I sort of flaked and didn' t listen to the game.  Oops.  He came in during the 6th inning as a defensive substitution in left.  He only had one turn at the plate, and grounded out.

This is the week...the final rosters will be set this week.  We'll know if Duffy will be heading to San Francisco with the big league team, or to Nashville to start the season with the AAA Sounds.  I'll be biting my nails all week, I think, until we know for sure.

March 26

I know -- it's been 3 days.  But Tuesday was an off day and Duffy didn't play yesterday.  I figured I'd wait until I had game stuff to report along with whatever else was going on.

So, we'll start with the game...Duffy did start today.  In Left Field.  In a lineup that included all of the probable regular startes except Ryan Braun (who is dealing with a tightness in his side).  Is that significant?  I think so...I hope so.  He played 6 full innings, had 1 hit, which was an RBI double and struck out once, to end the day with a .333 average.

The question is, is all that enough...the .333 average over 17 games and 57 at-bats, the 32 total bases, 1 stolen base, 1 home run and 11 RBI's...is that, coupled with his fine defensive play enough to earn a spot on not only the 40-man, but 25-man roster?

Here's a link to the break down from the J-S Online, with 2 weeks left.  Since then, Trot Nixon has been released and Wes Littleton cleared waivers.  Nixon was signed like Duffy was...to a minor league contract...so that's not an issue as far as the roster goes, but Littleton's status does open a spot.  Good news all around for Duffy, though I do wish Trot Nixon well.  Then there's the day-to-day status of Ryan Braun.  That could go in Duffy's favor as well.

I don't know how it's all going to shake down, but we should know by this time next week. Until then, to quote a friend, "Attababy" Duffy!  Keep playing hard and enjoy the sun.

Game note...tomorrow's game against the Rangers is being televised.  My guess is FSN locally and MLB Network for those of us not local.  First pitch is scheduled for 8pm Central Time.

March 23

Normally, I don't like Mondays...okay, so not many people look forward to them.  However, today was an exception. Work was well, you know...work, but at 5:00pm, MLB Network -- FSN for you all in either Denver or Milwaukee -- broadcast the game between the Rockies and The Brewers from Tucscon.  Good news -- yes.  Better news was that Duffy was indeed in the lineup.  Not a bad way to end a Monday.

The game overall wasn't great for the Brewers, but Duffy made some nice catches (though none of them of the Spiderman variety -- you know, where he climbs the fence and takes a homerun away -- but good none-the-less) and did manage to double in his last at bat, to finish with a .341 average.

As of right now, it's looking very good for him to make the roster, though there are still 2 weeks of camp left.

And I found this sentence from an MLB article on Trot Nixon that I love and had to post...(For the entire artcile click here)

But now the Brewers are more likely to pick two backup outfielders from a group that includes fellow non-roster invitee Chris Duffy, plus rostered players Tony Gwynn Jr. and Brad Nelson. Gwynn and Nelson are out of Minor League options, and Duffy has been a camp standout, hitting .347 entering play on Monday.

That is truly something I love to read...keep up the good play!

Tomorrow is an off day for the Brewers, so until Wednesday.

March 22

Woo Hoo!  There's good news today!  After leaving the game early on Thursday, being held out fo camp on Friday and being held to only batting practice yesterday, my favorite outfielder was back in the starting lineup today.  I'll have to admit that I was a little concerned with the dehydration factor, given that it's happened before (Sorry Chris...but the history is there), but I'm very glad he was back in action today.

And he had a good day...started in left field and from what I gathered by the broadcast, the winds out that way were tricky and he made some good grabs.  he was 1 for 3 at the plate, with 2 strikeouts, but he did drive in one run and score another, with his first stolen base of the spring in there as well.

So, ending today, Duffy has a .347 average, in 49 at-bats, with 17 hits, 6 of those are doubles, 1 triple, and 1 home run.  He's also stolen 1 base, been caught once and has been hit by a pitch once.

Monday's game is a night game and is to be televised on MLB Network and FSN.

March 21

Quick update today, hopefully with more tomorrow:

Outfielder Chris Duffy returned to camp after missing part of Thursday and all of Friday with a stomach ailment. He took batting practice and should be available to play again on Sunday.
He started the game on Thursay, but left before he came to the plate, with nausea. I'm very glad he was back in camp today and hope he's feeling tons better.

March 18

I know it was yesterday, but Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I suppose it was a propos that someone with a name like Christopher Duffy be given the night off.  Okay, they really wanted a few other guys to get some work in, but I figure the other could be true too.  Work with me.

Regardless, Duffy was back in the lineup today playing left field and batting in the 2-hole in the Brewers'  4-1 win over the Diamondbacks in Tucson.  He finished the day going 1 for 2 and a .348 average.  Nothing special -- no extra bases, no dazzling plays (that I heard, at least), no RBI's -- but the key is that he keeps hitting.  He's had a few games without any, but not many.  And he continues to impress the Brewer brass.  Hopefully impress them enough to keep him around when the team heads north...or to San Francisco, as the case may be...on April 7.

Tomorrow, they're back at Maryvale Baseball Park to take on the Cleveland Indians.

March 16

Quick recap of the last couple of days...

Yesterday...not such a good day for Chris Duffy at the plate, going 0-4, stranding 4 runners on base.  But he still played the entire game and that's still a good thing.

Today...much better!  He started in left and went 2 for 4, with and RBI.  I do believe he leads the team with a total of 9 RBI's right now.

Most of the blogs and columns I've been reading seem to think Duffy's up-to-now solid performance has made him a virtual lock to make the team as a reserve outfielder.  There would need to be a spot on the 25-man roster cleared for him, though.

From the Journal-Sentinel:

The battle for spots on the bench includes two groups of players.

"You have people that have a track record and you use filtered glasses to watch what they're doing in spring training," said Brewers manager Ken Macha. "Then you've got guys that are maybe excelling in spring training that have zero track record.

"To have 20 at-bats and make a decision, compared to somebody that has five or six years in the major leagues and has a track record, that's going to create an interesting study."

The "track record" players include outfielders Trot Nixon and Chris Duffy, and infielder Mike Lamb, who have varying degrees of big-league experience. The "zero track record" candidates include outfielder/first baseman Brad Nelson and infielder Casey McGehee.

Nelson (.360, one homer, six RBI, .485 OBP) and McGehee (.400, three homers, seven RBI, .423) are doing everything possible to prove they should be kept. Duffy (.325, one homer, eight RBI) has all but locked up the fourth outfielder job.

Lamb (.200, three RBI) has not been as impressive and Nixon (.125, one homer, three RBI) has not proven he has much gas left in his tank.

"We've talked about McGehee, Nelson and Duffy," said Macha. "They've done exceptionally well. Duffy's got a little bit of a track record, so I don't know which side of the fence you put him on."

If the roster includes 13 position players, that provides for four bench jobs other than backup catcher Mike Rivera. At this stage, if you went solely on performance, those spots would go to Duffy, Nelson, McGehee and Craig Counsell, who has the club made.

But, as Macha noted, decisions are based on more than spring production.

"You've got to look at, it's the bottom of the eighth and you've got a guy on third, and I need this run bad," said Macha. "Do I send somebody up there who knows what that pitcher has and what they're going to do to him? Or do I send somebody up there that is unaccustomed to that situation, and has relatively few at-bats in the major leagues?

"You have to be able to project what guys are going to do. You have to evaluate the veteran guys here and say, 'Does this guy have anything left?' The worse thing you can is make a mistake, one way or the other."

And then there's MLB Networks' 30 in 30 featuring the Brewers.  I have just one question -- Did they pay attention to any of the stats from the previous games when outlining who was in the mix for a bench spot?  I get that Trot Nixon is a bigger name, but  -- and maybe this is me and I'm slightly biased here -- given the way Duffy has been hitting, shouldn't he have had more than a fleeting mention while they were showing outfield drills?  Just a thought...

Tomorrow, they visit the Giants at Scottsdale stadium.

March 14

Duffy didn't play today against the Dodgers...he wasn't among the players that were active for the game in Glendale.  But click here for a nice interview that's on the Brewers' site.  What a rare treat!

March 13

I know it's still spring training, but there's something just wonderfully right in the world when there's baseball being played.

The Brewers ended today with a 5-1 win over the Kansas City Royals, and Chris Duffy continues his convincing bid to make that major league roster.  He finished the day going 2 for 4, one of those driving in a run.  He did get caught stealing, but overall, it was another good day.

From Anthony Witrado of the Journal-Sentinel:

Chris Duffy also contributed a pair of hits as he continues to nail down the fourth outfield spot.

I've got my fingers and toes crossed for the rest of the spring to go as well.  On tap for tomorrow -- the Dodgers at their new spring home at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, AZ.  First pitch is scheduled for 405pm Eastern Time.

So, I'm getting news..and it's all very good, after months of quiet...now, if I could only get more photos.  :-)

March 12

After an extra day off yesterday, Duffy was back in the starting lineup -- at Centerfield -- for the Brewers against the Padres.  And depending on how long Mike Cameron's rib cage is bothering him, there may be more starts for him.

Today's game went to a 10-inning, 10-10 tie.  Sweet #16 was in center for the entire game.  He finished the day with 3 hits, including a double, a run and an infield hit.  And he started the game with what sounded like a stellar catch in right center on a ball that was hit deep to right.

The Crew managed to string together four hits and two walks in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead at 7-5.  Brad Nelson began the inning with a walk, but Chris Duffy, who continues to hit the ball extremely well, truly sparked the offense in the inning with a double just after Nelson's at-bat.  The big blow came on a three-run home run by Corey Hart off Chris Britton to cap the seven-run outburst.  From Bernie's Crew

It all sounds like it's clicking for him...and I've got my fingers -- and toes -- crossed that it's enough for him to earn not only a spot on the expanded 40-man roster, but more importantly, on the 25-man roster that starts the season in San Francisco on April 7.

The Brewers are being spotlighted on the new MLB Network's 30 Clubs/30 Days on Sunday, March 15, 730pm, Eastern Time.

March 10

Did everyone read this?

Chris Duffy's two-run, second-inning double gave him a team-high seven RBIs.  (from the brewers.com article on the March 9 game against the Giants)

I've been a little behind in updating, but as you can see, it's been a good week for my favorite outfielder.  He's showing his versatility in all fields and even DH'd yesterday for the Brewers against the Giants.  As of yesterday, he has a .294 average, with a homerun, a triple, and 4 doubles...and that's playing almost all of the spring games the Brewers have played thus far!

And I got a special treat on Saturday, as the Brewers were playing the Cubs...a game on TV!  Okay, so it was a spring game, but seriously -- it made my day!  Granted, that was one of the rare games where Chris didn't get a hit, but that could be because the homeplate umpire needed glasses...Let's just say I don't think anyone agreed that he swung on the first pitch, or that the 3rd strike was anything but above the letters.  Even the Cubs' announcers agreed that he got the rough end of that at-bat.

It looks like Duffy is putting up the numbers to make him the front-runner for the 4th outfielder on the major league team.  I, for one, am hoping he keeps it up and that it's enough.

If anyone out there has photos they would like to share, again they would be appreciated and credit with be given.  And as always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact the administrator by clicking here, or the link at the bottom of the page.

No updates yesterday, as Duffy had the day off, but today...Holey Moley!  Let's just say, he's giving the Brewers' management something to think about, going 1 for 3 today, with a .294 average so far this spring -- having played in all but 1 game, and hitting a 3-run, HR with 2 outs.  Pretty cool!

Since the Brew Crew is light in outfielders, Duffy has been getting a fair amount of playing time.

Excerpts from the J-S Online:

Entering camp, Gwynn, Duffy and Nixon were considered to be in a three-way competition for one or two reserve outfield spots. Duffy has four hits in 14 at-bats (.286) and has made some nice plays in center. Nixon is hitless in 12 at-bats.

"They've been throwing (Nixon) a lot of off-speed pitches and he has been out in front of them, trying to pull them," Macha said. "Duffy, right now, out of those three, including Gwynn and Nixon, is kind of the front-runner right now. I'm not saying that won't change."

And...

"I've been pretty happy with watching Duffy play in center. He had a couple plays the other day against Oakland where he was a little hesitant on balls in right-center. That was addressed. We want him to be aggressive and take charge out there."

Can you feel it?  Spring is here!  Really, it is.  I've seen it, felt it and bathed in the sunlight.  I got back late on Friday from Florida and am just now getting around to posting updates.  I apologize for the delay.

I have to say though, I was really thrilled to see a Duffy highlight the VERY FIRST DAY of Spring Training!  How cool was that?!!!

So far, he has started 3 of the 4 games and is slated to start today, covering every outfield position.

A few bits and piece:

One thing working in Duffy's favor for making the team -- Dale Sveum managed him in the Pirates' farm system.

"I remember he's as good a centerfielder as I had ever seen on a daily basis, either playing or coaching," Sveum said. "He was very fundamentally sound. We used to make jokes about when he was going to miss his first cutoff man."

From the sound of it, since Ryan Braun will be leaving the team for the World Baseball Practice, Duffy should get a lot of playing time...stay tuned.

Spring Training is here!  Pitchers and catchers have reported in both the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues, with position players scheduled to report later in the week...by Tuesday for both the Pirates and the Brewers with full squad workouts set to begin on Wednesday.

One of the bloggers seems to think Duffy is Gwynn's primary competion for the backup spot...click here to read the entire entry.

Check back for the latest this week.

February 8

It's almost here!  It's almost time for pitchers and catchers to report, then the full squads later on!  Not to say I've been waiting, but it's been a very long winter...made longer after being robbed of seeing Duffy play from Mexico -- yes, I did watch as many games as I could online.  Of course that amounts to 2, due the assignement being curtailed, but I would have watched whatever I could.  I digress.  Friday marks the reporting date for pitchers and catchers and this week will be full of spring training previews.  A few have started to roll in:

From the Milwaukee Joural-Sentinel...

Brewers fans are forever asking what the club's plans are for centerfielder Tony Gwynn Jr., a second-round pick in 2003 who has seen action in the majors in parts of the past three seasons. Gwynn's fate should be determined this spring because he is out of minor-league options, meaning the Brewers must keep him, trade him or place him on waivers at the end of camp.

With Mike Cameron serving a 25-game suspension at the start of last season, Gwynn had his chance to prove himself in center. Unfortunately, he suffered a hamstring strain after a couple of games, went on the disabled list and missed his big opportunity.

Gwynn spent most of the season at Nashville, batting .275 in 93 games with two homers, 26 RBI, a .328 on-base percentage and .331 slugging percentage. In 130 games in the majors, Gwynn has batted .248 with a .300 on-base percentage, low numbers for a leadoff-type hitter.

"It's a big spring for Tony," said Melvin. "We're all interested in seeing what he does. He'll have his chance to make the club."

Chris Duffy, a non-roster invitee to camp, is a player very similar to Gwynn in skills. And veteran outfielder Trot Nixon will get his shot to prove he has something left in his tank.

Gwynn, Duffy and Nixon are all left-handed hitters, so no one has an advantage there. At the most, only two can make the 25-man roster.

Another longtime prospect out of options is first baseman/outfielder Brad Nelson, who finally got a taste of the majors in '08 as a September call-up. As possible coverage in Nashville for losing Nelson in a roster move, the Brewers signed first baseman Scott Thorman to a minor-league deal.

And this, also from the Journal Sentinel:

5. Who will back up in the outfield?

We know the starting outfielders - Ryan Braun in left, Mike Cameron in center and Corey Hart in right - will see the majority of the action. All three are right-handed hitters, not exactly the optimum situation for a balanced lineup.

The top candidates for the one or two backup spots are all left-handed hitters - Tony Gwynn Jr., Trot Nixon and Chris Duffy. Nixon's best days obviously are behind him at age 34, but Melvin hopes he will be this year's Gabe Kapler, a veteran who rebounds to provide production off the bench.

Gwynn is out of minor-league options, so it's a make-or-break camp for him. Duffy, who is coming off shoulder surgery, has a similar skill set to Gwynn, especially as a fly-chaser in center, but with a bit more pop in his bat.

Sorry for being absent.  I've had a lot going on.  I've  been trying to figure out how to get to both Bradenton for the Pirates spring training and Phoenix for the Brewers.  Alas, I had to choose and Florida won -- something about being near a powdery beach with that warm Gulf water won...besides, I am a Pirates' fan first.  Sorry.

However, if any of you followers of the Brew Crew ARE going to spring training and happen to get some photos of Mr. Duffy, I would love to post them...with credit of course.  And any stories would be wonderful too.  Just send them to the administrator -- that's me.  ;-)

For those of you who are Pirates' fans, I did go to Pirates Fest and will be adding my account of that to that section this weekend.  Sorry again for the delay.  What with the weather and a little Super Bowl win going on, I haven't gotten around to it.

As of tonight, there is a week until pitchers and catchers report -- how cool is that?!!   (Not that I'm counting or anything...or missing this great sport so much that I'm watching the Caribbean Series on MLB Network.)

January 23

So, they've assigned numbers for the non-roster invitees, and I've got a really good feeling about this...Duffy has been given #16 -- My personal favorite uniform number.  I'm taking that as a positive sign.  Silly?  Maybe, but let me have my happy thoughts, okay?

For my fellow Pirates fans, it's Pirates' Fest weekend!  WOOHOO!  For schedules and tickets click HERE.  I'll be attending 2, perhaps all 3 days -- I haven't decided yet.

I know...no Chris Duffy at either event.  Oh well...Spring training is coming.

Speaking of which...there's a countdown to Spring Training on both homepages...21 days for the Brewers and 20 for the Pirates.  I can't wait!

January 19

I have added a link for those of you who are Pirates' fans to catch up on those events, etc.  I live in Pittsburgh and plan on spending a good part of the season at PNC cheering the Bucs on, even without the prospect of Chris Duffy roaming centerfield in Black and Gold.

For you all who follow the Brew Crew, I'll include links with daily posts, as well as the team link.

Pirates' Winter Caravan started yesterday and there are photos and a brief synopsis from myself under the Pirates' link.

Oh yeah...and according to Ryan Doumit, Chris is doing well and ready for spring training to start.

With spring training due to start on or around February 14, it shouldn't be long now before there's baseball being played.
